Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics was founded in 2009 and moved to its new campus in 2014. Although the school emphasises the teaching of physics and mathematics, attention is also paid to the arts and humanities. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities and has a democratic government structure.
Astana became the capital of Kazakhstan in 1997 at the initiative of the first President of the Republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev. It is a boldly ambitious reworking of the historic town of Aqmola or Tselinograd into a contemporary regional hub featuring iconic architecture including Norman Foster's Pyramid and Khan Shatyr. In 2017, Astana will host the international exposition, Expo 2017.
